Acyclovir — The Herpes Treatment
Acyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat herpes infections. Zovirax is a brand name of acyclovir. Acyclovir is used for treating herpes zoster, herpes simplex and genital herpes.
Herpes is a viral infection that has no cure so treatment is important to people who have it. It is possible to spread herpes to others even while on treatment. It is also possible to spread herpes when you have no visible symptoms.
If you feel you may have herpes, you should see a doctor immediately for proper diagnosis and a treatment plan. Even though there is currently no cure or vaccine for herpes, treatment can help you live a comfortable life with the virus.
Oral herpes causes cold sores and fever blisters in the mouth and around the mouth area. They can even occur on the tongue and gums and can make eating difficult. These cold sores are usually very painful especially if they burst and erupt.
Other symptoms from oral herpes include sore throat and sore or bleeding gums. You may also have swollen lymph nodes.
Certain medications help with the pain as well as help the sores heal more quickly. When acyclovir is used regularly, it can help prevent cold sores from appearing.
Acyclovir may need to be taken up to 5 times per day to treat herpes. It does not cure herpes but works to decrease pain and itching from sores. It works best when used when symptoms first appear.
There are some side effects to acyclovir but most are mild. For example, acyclovir can cause nausea when taken orally. If you take acyclovir with food or milk, it will reduce nausea. Try not to lie down immediately after taking the medication.
When using cream forms of acyclovir, you should wash and dry the area completely. Ointment is typically applied every 3 hours, 6 times a day for about 7 days. You should see the sores healing within a couple days of treatment but you should still continue taking the medication for as long as your doctor suggested.
Genital Herpes Treatment
Genital herpes symptoms also involve sores or lesions but on the genital area; vagina, vulva, penis and anal area. Some people even get them on the thighs and buttocks and women can get them on the cervix. These sores can be very painful and extremely contagious when present.
Acyclovir is used to treat genital herpes the same way it does oral herpes. It is also used for herpes zoster and chicken pox. Acyclovir comes as a cream a pill or a liquid. You should always take your mediation exactly as prescribed. Do not stop taking it just because you are feeling better. Always discuss it with your doctor if you are thinking about coming off your medication.
Symptoms should begin to disappear within a couple days of taking acyclovir and your sores will begin to crust and dry up.
Buying Acyclovir and Saving Money
You can get a prescription for acyclovir from your doctor and can buy it from your local pharmacy. The generic brand of acyclovir is usually cheaper than Zovirax.
If, like most people, you are into saving money, there are many places online that offer discounted acyclovir as well as other herpes medications.
Although uncommon, be aware that some side effects of acyclovir may include:
- Sore throat
- Skin rash
Getting proper treatment for your herpes outbreak is important. Until there is a cure or a vaccine for herpes, treatment can help you live a healthy and more comfortable life with herpes.
